Numenera 2: Discovery and Destiny

Created by Monte Cook Games

Numenera is a game in which player characters explore the ruins of aeons past to gather amazing treasures and help build a new future for a world struggling in darkness. Since the launch of Numenera in 2013, we have delivered well on the first part, but we’ve always wanted to do a more thorough job exploring that second part. That desire has led us to Numenera Discovery and Numenera Destiny. Numenera Discovery will be a book that covers familiar territory; it is basically a revision of the original Numenera corebook. Next summer, we will allow the original corebook to go out of print, and Numenera Discovery will take its place. In Numenera Discovery, you’ll get some revisions to make things clearer and more fun, and to increase the options available to players. Nanos, Jacks, and Glaives will get an overhaul. Many foci and some of the descriptors might see some reworking. You’ll have more options, clearer rules, and perhaps a bit of expansion to the regions of the Steadfast and the Beyond that are covered in the existing corebook. As excited as we are about Numenera Discovery, we may be even more excited about Numenera Destiny. This title will enable characters to truly become a part of the setting—to help shape the future of the Ninth World. The people of the Ninth World are locked in a medieval-like state, a world of struggle and danger and often suffering in the shadow of the prior worlds’ wonders. Numenera Destiny allows you to build adventures and campaigns in which players don’t just explore the wonders of the past—they utilize them to help lift the Ninth World out of darkness. You can make the world a better place. Help a community defend itself from abhumans or the iron wind. Create centers of learning or trade. Innovate, build, and protect. Manage an entire community and help it prosper and grow—or simply create a cool base or vehicle for your adventuring group. Numenera Destiny will allow you to take what you discover and make your mark on history as someone who elevated the Ninth World into the future. Adventuring—exploring the weird and wondrous remnants of the prior worlds—remains, of course, at the core of Numenera play. Numenera Destiny will give you new things to do with your discoveries, along with entirely new and epic ways to structure your campaigns. You’ll discover materials, power sources, and treasures that you can utilize in an entirely new, robust crafting and building system. And perhaps best of all, Numenera Destiny will offer three new character types and a number of new descriptors and foci geared toward this innovative style of play.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

A New Book: Building Tomorrow Is Funded!
over 6 years ago – Tue, Sep 19, 2017 at 11:07:58 PM

Can you believe we’re just a few hours into this campaign, and we’ve already unlocked a hardcover supplement stretch goal? Yes, that’s right: If your rewards include all the unlocked books, you’re now getting the 160-page Building Tomorrow as part of your rewards. (Not backing at such a level? The hardcover is also an add-on. But you might consider upgrading—this isn’t the only book we’d like to unlock!)

So what’s next? Another book! This is a more modest proposal, but it’s a super handy product: the Numenera Player’s Guide. Create characters, explore the setting, and learn the basic rules in this second copy of key rules and setting material. It’ll be perfect for getting a taste of the game, for having an extra rules and setting reference on hand at the gaming table, or for game masters to hand to new players. The 64-page softcover will be a fantastic, ready resource for anyone playing Numenera, and a wonderful introduction and teaching tool for the game.

It won’t contain any new information that isn’t also in Numenera Discovery, but it will give you an extra set of rules for your gaming table. It’s also something you can give to a friend who hasn’t tried Numenera yet, to get them into the game. We’ll add the Numenera Player’s Guide at $190,000, and of course anyone who is getting all the books as part of their reward will get a copy, in PDF and/or softcover.

Thanks for the incredible support! Please keep spreading the word, because we’d love to fund this and the many other great ideas we have for making Numenera everything it can be—and adding items and upgrades like these to your rewards.

And stay tuned for an update about Ellomyr, coming this afternoon!

We Are Building Something Wondrous!
over 6 years ago – Tue, Sep 19, 2017 at 10:49:58 PM

Wow! We are funded!

To be perfectly honest, for the past couple of weeks as we worked more and more on this Kickstarter campaign, all of us here at MCG had the sense that this one was probably going to be special. We never, ever take our backers—or the results of any Kickstarter campaign— for granted, but we’re really excited about this, our tenth Kickstarter on (roughly) the five-year anniversary of the one that started it all. And as buzz about Numenera Discovery and Numenera Destiny grew in recent weeks, we got the sense that you were pretty excited too.

The fact that I’m typing this so quickly after the launch of the campaign—and that you’re here to read it—proves that excitement right. We here at MCG are amazed at the roaring start you’ve given this campaign, and we can’t wait to see where it goes in the days and weeks to come.

If you’ve followed our campaigns in the past, you know that we often hit a few stretch goals. We hope this campaign will be no exception. We’re doing something a little differently, though—we’re going for fewer, larger stretch goals. We don’t expect to unlock quite as many as some of our other campaigns, but we think every single one of them will knock your socks off.

So let’s talk about the first one!

This is Building Tomorrow, a hefty hardcover sourcebook for Numenera that, if we make this stretch goal, we’ll put out next year. With this book we’ll give you more installations and items to build, more allies to recruit for your community, more sample communities to build from—and more dangerous challenges to face. Building Tomorrow will be a 160-page hardcover sourcebook that expands on the community-related content introduced in Numenera Destiny. It’ll be an indispensable supplement whether your group is building a whole community, a vehicle, or a base for themselves, or just wants more resources for exploring.

We’ll make Building Tomorrow a reality if we hit $140,000. If you’re backing at a level that gets you all the books from this campaign, it will be one of your rewards!

Not every stretch goal will be as momentous as an entire new book, but that’s the sort of thing we want to focus on in this campaign. We have many, many other cool plans, should we be lucky enough to fund this stretch goal and those beyond it!

As we mention on the Kickstarter page, one of the fun things we’ll be doing throughout this campaign is tracing the growth of Ellomyr, a settlement in the Ninth World. Ellomyr’s story will be the basis for The Trilling Shard—but that story hasn’t been written yet! Look forward to the launch of that story in an update later today. We think it’s going to be a lot of fun facing the challenges of a small Ninth World clave together, and together helping it (hopefully) thrive and grow. I hope you’ll be a part of it!
