Numenera 2: Discovery and Destiny

Created by Monte Cook Games

Numenera is a game in which player characters explore the ruins of aeons past to gather amazing treasures and help build a new future for a world struggling in darkness. Since the launch of Numenera in 2013, we have delivered well on the first part, but we’ve always wanted to do a more thorough job exploring that second part. That desire has led us to Numenera Discovery and Numenera Destiny. Numenera Discovery will be a book that covers familiar territory; it is basically a revision of the original Numenera corebook. Next summer, we will allow the original corebook to go out of print, and Numenera Discovery will take its place. In Numenera Discovery, you’ll get some revisions to make things clearer and more fun, and to increase the options available to players. Nanos, Jacks, and Glaives will get an overhaul. Many foci and some of the descriptors might see some reworking. You’ll have more options, clearer rules, and perhaps a bit of expansion to the regions of the Steadfast and the Beyond that are covered in the existing corebook. As excited as we are about Numenera Discovery, we may be even more excited about Numenera Destiny. This title will enable characters to truly become a part of the setting—to help shape the future of the Ninth World. The people of the Ninth World are locked in a medieval-like state, a world of struggle and danger and often suffering in the shadow of the prior worlds’ wonders. Numenera Destiny allows you to build adventures and campaigns in which players don’t just explore the wonders of the past—they utilize them to help lift the Ninth World out of darkness. You can make the world a better place. Help a community defend itself from abhumans or the iron wind. Create centers of learning or trade. Innovate, build, and protect. Manage an entire community and help it prosper and grow—or simply create a cool base or vehicle for your adventuring group. Numenera Destiny will allow you to take what you discover and make your mark on history as someone who elevated the Ninth World into the future. Adventuring—exploring the weird and wondrous remnants of the prior worlds—remains, of course, at the core of Numenera play. Numenera Destiny will give you new things to do with your discoveries, along with entirely new and epic ways to structure your campaigns. You’ll discover materials, power sources, and treasures that you can utilize in an entirely new, robust crafting and building system. And perhaps best of all, Numenera Destiny will offer three new character types and a number of new descriptors and foci geared toward this innovative style of play.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

Explorer’s Keys Unlocked!
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 27, 2017 at 09:56:07 PM

Another stretch goal is unlocked—Explorer’s Keys: Ten Instant Adventures for Numenera is now a thing! If you’re getting all the titles, this is part of your rewards for free. (And if you aren’t—well you should be! This now makes TWELVE products as part of that reward!)

There are four hours left in this campaign—at the rate we’re going, if we can keep spreading the word we can definitely unlock the next stretch goal as well! We just announced it in the last update, but in case you missed it, this stretch goal will be a two-parter.

At $810,000 we’ll make the Creature Deck 3. This 100-card deck will feature creatures from the Ninth World Bestiary 3 and other new products. Like our other creature decks, each card has stats and information about the creature on one side, and an image you can show your players on the other. These decks are super, super handy, during prep and at the game table. Pull out just the creatures you need for a session, or even generate an encounter randomly with the turn of a card. The Creature Deck 3 will be added to every backer level that includes all the titles.

We should be able to hit $810,000. But if we all really get out there and spread the word, maybe we can make it to $840,000. And if we do that, we’ll double down on this stretch goal. In addition to the Creature Deck 3, we’ll also do this awesome box for storing, organizing, and using your Numenera decks at the game table. This box will be added FREE to every backer level that includes all the titles in print.

You can find all the details about this great deck solution in the last update. To make this happen, we will all have to get out there and find new backers. So if you want this, hit reddit, hit Twitter, hit Facebook, hit EN World, hit RPG.net. Text your friends. Go anywhere gamers discuss games, and let them know how cool this campaign is!

Spread the word, and let’s make the Creature Deck 3, and maybe an awesome deck box too!

Thanks for your support!

Let’s Make This Cool Deck Box!
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 27, 2017 at 09:48:01 PM

We are already closing in on making Explorer’s Keys a reality—with your help, we could be there in less than an hour!

But there’s something else we’d really like to make, and we can’t wait any longer to share it with you. Our next stretch goal—once we unlock Explorer’s Keys—will be a two-parter.

Get us to $810,000, and we’ll make the Creature Deck 3.

And the Creature Deck 3 will be added to every backer level that includes all the titles.

But. . .

We make a lot of decks—we’ve already funded two in this campaign alone. Wrangling all these cards can be a challenge. So we’d also like to make this:

This is a deck box, but it’s more than that. We’re going to make a system for storing and organizing your decks—and also for easily accessing and using them at the game table. These images are just concepts, and the final design may change a bit, but check out the box as we currently envision it:

  • The box holds all the existing Numenera decks, plus some useful extras like the Cypher System NPC Deck, with some extra space as well.
  • It’s sized to sit perfectly on your bookshelf, alongside your RPG books.
  • And it has a small footprint, making it convenient to use at the gaming table.
  • The decks are super easy to view and access during play or prep.
  • And, of course, it will be durable and beautiful, with thoughtful design features like magnetic closures.

If we can get to $840,000, this next stretch goal will include the Creature Deck 3—and we’ll extend it to include this deck box as well! And everyone getting all the titles will get the deck box too!

This is something we here at MCG have been wanting from some time, and judging from the Kickstarter comments, a lot of you have been, too. $840,000 is a real stretch in the hours we have left in this campaign—but that’s what stretch goals are for! To make this happen, we will all have to get out there and find new backers. So if you want this, hit reddit, hit Twitter, hit Facebook, hit EN World, hit RPG.net. Text your friends. Go anywhere gamers discuss games, and let them know how cool this campaign is!

So spread the word, and let’s make the Creature Deck 3, and maybe the deck box too!

Ninth World Bestiary 3 Is Upgraded—Let’s Do Another Book!
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 27, 2017 at 09:46:13 PM

Don’t miss these very cool add-ons, most of which are exclusive to this campaign. To get an add-on, simply increase your pledge amount by the cost of the item, without changing your backer level. We'll ask you after the campaign what the extra was for. You can use our handy pledge calculator to figure out your total pledge.

Iadace, Numenera backers! You’ve done it again—you’ve blown us through yet another stretch goal. The Ninth World Bestiary 3 is now a massive 192 pages, with a double-sided poster. This is the sixth major book upgrade of this campaign—you are truly helping us make Numenera everything we really want it to be.

But we’re not done yet!

Let’s make another book.

We released the first book of Instant Adventures, Weird Discoveries, a few years back, and ever since then Numenera fans and GMs have been clamoring for more. Like that title, Explorer’s Keys will contain ten adventures—adventures you can easily integrate into your campaign, or run on their own as one-shots. But here’s the best part: the innovative Instant Adventure format is super low-prep. You can literally (and I do mean literally—literally) run an Instant Adventure with less that ten minutes prep time. The same time it takes to set up a board game. In other words, in addition to being full-fledged, fully detailed adventures you can run as part of your campaign, these adventures also make for perfect pickup games. Explorer’s Keys will even come with pregenerated characters, so you could run a Numenera session at the drop of a hat.

We’ll make Explorer’s Keys: Ten Instant Adventures for Numenera when you get us to $780,000. And it will be added to the rewards of every backer who’s getting all the titles. In other words, this is a free addition to your rewards in PDF if you’re backing at ALL THE BOOKS IN PDF, and it’s added to your rewards in print and PDF if you’re backing at ALL THE BOOKS IN PRINT AND PDF or above.

So the only price you have to pay is to get us to $780,000. Get out there and spread the word. There’s plenty of time left, and plenty of gamers who haven’t backed this campaign yet!

Thank you for all your support!

A Couple of Things for the Final Day of the Campaign
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 27, 2017 at 09:43:04 PM

Wow! What a campaign this has been! It’s the final hour, and we’re still charging toward an additional stretch goal!

Before the campaign reaches its end, I wanted to give you a little checklist of things you might do to make sure you get all of the rewards you deserve without any hiccups. Without further ado:

1. Double-check Your Pledge. Go right now to the Kickstarter page and make sure you the reward level you want. If you want any add-ons, make sure you’ve increased your pledge amount accordingly. (Our pledge calculator can help you out.)

2. Credit Card. Please make sure your credit card information in Kickstarter is current and correct.

3. Last Minute Reward Add-Ons. Once the Kickstarter campaign is over, you won't be able to modify your pledge using Kickstarter. Add-ons should available, for a limited time, through BackerKit. We can't guarantee it, though, so if there's something you want, now's the time to be sure you get it.

4. Be Prepared for Additional Updates. The Kickstarter campaign is ending soon, but we’ll be interacting for some time—most rewards won’t ship for many months! Updates are the most reliable way of reaching all backers, so please make sure you read them and that they don’t go to your spam folder.

5. How Do You Spell Your Name? We apologize if this sounds silly or condescending, but it’s a real issue, and we have no other choice but to confront it head-on. Occasionally, in haste, people misspell or omit critical information when they provide it to us. This creates problems with shipping and sending rewards. When you provide information—your name, address, and so on—please pay close attention to all the details. If you live overseas, and your name or address includes special or accented characters, if at all possible please instead use the closest standard alphabetical character. Accented characters are often garbled as the Internet tries to convert them into American text; an "É" may come through the system written as "$%^", rendering your address undeliverable. Sometimes we can determine the correct spelling, but often not.

6. Spread the Word One Last Time! This campaign isn’t over yet—and we're inches away from a final stretch goal!

We greatly appreciate all your support. Thank you for helping to bring Numenera into the future!

Thank you for all your support!

ELLOMYR IS IN TROUBLE!
over 6 years ago – Fri, Oct 27, 2017 at 09:18:50 PM

The victory over the mutated margr is a short-lived joy. The tumultuous conflict has disturbed something ancient beneath the city itself!

How can we stop this surprising rampage? Ellomyr needs help, and needs it now! Go out and bring in new backers—if we can get to 4,100, the rampage will end.

The original Numenera Kickstarter campaign had 4,658 backers. Could we hit that number? It's a heck of a stretch, but worth trying for. Please hit social media, sites like EN World, RPG.net, and reddit, and tell people how cool this campaign has become. Because if we could hit 4,658, who knows what that might mean for Ellomry?

The ground shook. We all looked around in confusion. More margr? The remnants of their horde had scattered back into the hills. No. This was something different.

A burning building near us collapsed with a crash. The man next to me cursed in surprise. Just structural damage from the fire and fighting, right?

The ground shook again. I spun around and my gaze fell upon the centerpiece of old Ellomyr. The Trilling Shard itself. It was moaning like I’d never heard it before.

Another crackling rumble. An entire section of the old paved square fell apart and dropped into a space below. I’d heard once that there were old tunnels around the Trilling Shard. Someone once suggested that they were for waste disposal?

Or maybe something else.

A… thing of angles and limbs, glistening in the late afternoon sun like metal newly cast, rose up from the hole. The size of a building, it sprang to life with inner lights of various colors. People around me screamed. What was this thing? It looked a little like the shard itself. Something about the configuration of lines, corners, and curves, like recognizing the familiar parts of a sibling’s face.

Then the screams themselves were drowned in the machine’s own noise. A vibrating screech that shattered windows. I stumbled backward and fell.

Did Ellomyr save itself from an invading horde only to be destroyed by a thing birthed of its very heart?

Thank you for all your support!
